SOP Guideline:
Before writing an SOP, make sure you find the right program for which you are going to apply. The SOP should not be general, but should indicate that it was written specifically for this program only. To do this, read the program’s website carefully at least once or twice to find out what they want from the student. An ideal SOP should emphasize your skills, strengths and justify any obvious weaknesses, reflecting your motives behind applying for a particular program.
My suggestion is to start writing SOPs with a single bullet point describing all your abilities and strengths related to the program. Think of the SOP as a virtual interview and imagine that someone is asking you about skills and how you can contribute to their program, then write down the answer you think you would have given. If it were a real interview. Don’t look for other people’s SOPs because those points will be on your mind instead of thinking about what your real abilities are. If you write and adapt your own story, it will definitely make it unique.
To do all that, make sure you have searched the program properly, you know yourself well and it must match your interest as well as your academic background.
Key points for writing SOP:
The one I am writing is not an ideal one but the purpose is defining key points you should consider. And obviously, you can alter them according to your thinking/situation.
- Start with your motivation that why you chose to be an engineer (your undergrad degree) and what led you to do the specific degree precisely.
- Briefly describe your educational background and what you learned during your undergraduate period. I do not recommend writing the names of the subjects as I have studied thermodynamics and are related to the master’s program for which I am applying. They can see it from the copy. Write articles only if you have something special to say outside of this course or something other than just mentioning them. For the Final Year Project (FYP), don’t just write that I did it and that is because you will mention in your CV what you did. What problem did you solve or what were the possibilities, what did you learn and how can you apply that knowledge in your desired study?
- Write about your job, if you have any, and internships you did and tell what you learned there rather than just writing your job responsibilities, which is a part of the CV. Also, write about extracurricular activities and what you learned from them.
- After writing this, connect your past with your future, starting with why you chose this particular MS program. Describe what you expect from this program, how it will help you to overcome your weakness (do not say directly that it is my weakness, etc.) and what skills you gained after this program. (To do so, read their objectives. Results from the program’s website).
- Then further link this MS program with your career goals. Describe your career goals properly and state how this MS program can be a bridge to achieve your career goals.
- Lastly, conclude your SOP with clear objecting which should be in line with all the things you have written.
- Linking everything is very important so make sure there is a flow and linkage between
each line and paragraph.
Make sure you get proofreading from someone as this will help you find out what the reader thinks about the SOP you have written. Try to see if it shows what you want to say.
Note: The SOP represents the duplicate and the other side of the CV. Make sure you do not repeat what is written in the transcript / CV in your SOP. In the SOP, write down what you learned, what skills you developed, how it changed our personality, instead of me doing this and that or writing down my job responsibilities in the CV.
Erasmus Mundus Scholarship:
Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree (EMJMD) is an international scholarship offered by European Union, where the students have a chance to complete their master’s degree jointly offered by multiple universities. The student studies in at least two universities in Europe (Sometimes outside Europe too).
Fulbright Scholarship:
Fulbright offers you a fully funded opportunity to study in the USA (both Masters and PhD) funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The grant includes tuition fees, scholarships, health insurance and a return air ticket for master’s students. The amount of stipend varies from state to state.
Commonwealth Masters Scholarships:
The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC) is offered by the UK government for postgraduate education in all fields (except MBA) in the UK. The CSC does not accept applications directly, so applications must be submitted through the nominating agency (HEC is the nominating agency in Pakistan). HEC only nominates candidates so this is not a HEC Scholarship. You must apply at both the Commonwealth as well as the HEC sites, the initial screening is done by the HEC either through tests / interviews or both.
The names of the shortlisted candidates are sent to CSC and CSC then the nominees are selected by HEC and they are offered scholarships. Furthermore, CSC is just a funding agency, so you have to get yourself admitted to the university. On the safe side, apply to universities as soon as the scholarship is open.
Commonwealth Shared Scholarship:
Commonwealth Shared Scholarships are financially ‘joint’ between the Commonwealth Commission and the host university in the UK. The commission pays your tuition fees and the university you go to pays your living allowance.
Each participating UK university will conduct its own recruitment process to select a specific number of candidates for the Commonwealth Common Scholarship. Universities should present their selected candidates before the CSC. The CSC will then verify that these candidates meet the eligibility criteria for the scheme.
Your fee is waived and you receive a £ 1,084 per month, or £ 1,330 per month allowance for those living in universities in the London Metropolitan Area.
Chevening Scholarship:
Chevening Scholarships give you the opportunity to study in the UK. Applicants can apply for Masters Scholarships as well as Doctoral Degree Scholarship will all the expenses covered. The scholarship is valid for 1 year (just like the Commonwealth) and is accepted worldwide.
MEXT Japan Scholarship:
MEXT is a Japanese government scholarship for both Masters Scholarships and PhD covering almost all fields of engineering, non-engineering, social sciences and life sciences. For MEXT, you do not need IELTS / TOEFL and you can only apply using the English proficiency certificate issued by your respective university. You will need to submit your study and research plan with your application.
Turkiye Burslari:
This includes tuition fees, accommodation, health insurance, air tickets as well as a monthly stipend of 1100 TL. For Masters, the scholarship is usually for three years (1 year for Turkish language and 2 years for MS). In the application, you need to write a letter, the area of study, the title of your work and, its analysis and the research method you will adopt.

Bilkent University Scholarship:
The Bilkent University Scholarship invites applications from international students who wish to pursue a master’s degree at Bilkent University, Turkey. You must have a GRE (Quantum 153) and TOELF / IELTS (6.5 IELTS with no less than 5.5 accepted). The minimum CGPA required to apply for the graduate program is 2.8 on a scale of 4.00. Scholarships include tuition fees and a monthly stipend of 300 TL / month.
Chinese Government Scholarship:
Chinese Government Scholarship (CGS) is a scholarship funded entirely by the Chinese government. You will not need to pay any tuition or hostel fees to the university during the entire degree program.
You will definitely get monthly stipend about 1800 to 2500 RMB (For Masters) and 2000 to 3500 RMB (For PhD).
Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship:
The Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship programme is scholarship programme by Hungarian Government. Hungary Government Scholarship is available for both Masters and PhD Degree Programs. Also there is No Need of IELTS or TOFEL to apply for this scholarship.
DAAD Germany Scholarship:
This is a German scholarship which includes 12 to 36 months funding for Masters Scholarships or PhD. Only graduates with at least two years of professional experience can apply for this scholarship, depending on the level of education, 850 euros per month for graduates or 1,200 euros for doctoral candidates.
King Fahd University Scholarship:
King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals offers Masters Scholarships as well as PhD Scholarships for International Students. The KFUPM online application portal opens twice a year and covers almost every university. Scholarships include tuition fees, monthly stipends, accommodation, medical as well as subsidized meals at University Cafeteria and return tickets. For MS, you need a minimum CGPA of 3.00 on a scale of 4.00 in your undergraduate degree.
IELTS/TOEFL and GRE is not compulsory at the time of application however it is required for the final decision. If you don’t submit these documents, you receive a provisional acceptance and then you have to submit IELTS (min 6.0 for MS)/TOEFL (min. is 68 iBT for MS) and GRE General (min. Quant. is 156, min. King Abdullah University of Science and Technology Scholarship:
KAUST offers Masters Scholarships as well as PhD Scholarships. Scholarships include tuition fees, monthly stipends (between $ 20,000-30,000 per year, depending on qualification and advancement through degree programs), accommodation, medical as well as subsidized meals at University Cafeteria and return tickets.
IELTS/TOEFL is required while GRE is not mandatory but is strongly encouraged and will enhance your chances of selection.
King Abdulaziz University (KAU) Scholarship:

Khalifa University Scholarship:
Khalifa University of Science and Technology offers Graduate Research / Teaching Assistant (GRTA) Scholarships to assist eligible international students enrolled in graduate programs. Scholarships generously offer compensation and benefits including: full tuition fee coverage, medical insurance coverage for students under Khalifa University Visa, support for participation in international research conferences. The stipend amount is equivalent to 8,000 AED per month for the master student.
Candidate can apply using English Proficiency Certificate. After application, shortlisted candidates will be invited for interview via skype. In interview, you first have to give a presentation, in which you have to give your introduction, short term career plans, long term career plans and future goals.
Hong Kong PhD Fellowship:
The Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS) aims to attract the world’s best and brightest students to pursue PhD studies at Hong Kong universities. The Fellowship provides an annual stipend of HK $ 309,600 (approximately US $ 39,700) and HK $ 12,900 (approximately US $ 1,700) for conference and research related travel allowance for a period of up to three years each year.
Government of Brunei Scholarship:
