Since 2015, the University of Pisa and the China Scholarship Council (CSC) have agreed to provide 40 scholarships annually to outstanding Chinese students to pursue a complete PhD program at UniPi. The University of Pisa (Italy) and the China Scholarship Council (CSC) have long collaborated to sponsor this joint PhD scholarship program. In accordance with this arrangement, chosen applicants join in a full PhD program at the University of Pisa and get a doctorate from UniPi following successful completion and dissertation defense.

Each year, 40 financed PhD places in a variety of fields are made available through the University of Pisa Joint PhD Scholarship 2026. Selected academics gain from:

• UNIPI will waive tuition, which includes:
  • Registration/tuition fee;
  • the cost of the thesis defense;
  • the equipment and resources required for the study;
• the facilities and resources, such as a library, computer use, study space, and access to a laboratory.
• The chosen candidate will have official access to their particular research grants and join the research groups of professors.
• Successful applicants will receive all necessary assistance from UNIPI for housing, banking, and visa procedures, as well as a complimentary Italian language course.

Eligibility Criteria:

• Those applying under the China Scholarship Council framework must be Chinese nationals.
• Applicants must finish their master’s degree by December 31, 2026.
• Candidates must fulfill the University of Pisa’s academic admission requirements for the chosen PhD program.
• Applicants must have excellent English proficiency.
• Applicants must meet the requirements for both CSC selection and UniPi PhD admission.
• Acceptance by the University of Pisa and a successful nomination through CSC are prerequisites for final admission.

How to Apply for University of Pisa Joint PhD Scholarship?

There are two elements to the selection process:

• Pre-selection by UNIPI to receive an admissions offer;
• Selection by CSC to potentially receive a scholarship.

1. PRE-SELECTION BY UNIPI:

Prospective PhD students must complete and submit this form by January 31, 2026, indicating the PhD program of interest and attaching all the previously indicated necessary documents in order to receive the pre-acceptance letter.

2. SELECTION BY CSC:

• Successful applicants must apply for CSC financing after UNIPI notifies them of their acceptance.
• In accordance with CSC priorities and regulations, the applications will be reviewed between March and June 2026. UNIPI will receive a final list of scholarship beneficiaries, and the chosen applicants will be notified.
• Only applicants who receive the CSC Scholarship will be accepted by UNIPI.
