PEN/Faulkner is offering the coveted Lisa Page Literary Education Fellowship 2025, which is a one-year, part-time teaching and literary engagement fellowship that may be renewed for a second year. This opportunity, named for the renowned former PEN/Faulkner board member Lisa Page, allows one committed fiction writer to become a member of PEN/Faulkner’s Education Programs team in order to directly introduce the transformational potential of fiction to students in public schools in Washington, DC.

Financial Benefits:

The Lisa Page Literary Education Fellowship 2025 in the USA for International Students has the following benefits:

  • A stipend of $30,000 per year

Responsibilities:

The fellowship will have the following duties:

  • Throughout the academic year, we plan, schedule, and oversee a total of 24 sessions at two DC schools as part of our Writers in Residence program.
  • Over the year, we plan, schedule, and conduct about 40 workshops (total) in DC schools as part of our Writing Workshops initiative.
  • Arranging about 75 author visits (to assist other writers) as a component of our Writers in Schools and Writers in Schools-Nuestras Voces initiatives
  • Providing a range of assistance to the Director of Education Programs at PEN/Faulkner, such as the following:
    • Coordination of author visits
    • Data entry for questionnaires conducted after a visit
    • Keeping track of our author and book database, ordering books, and managing book lists
    • Reaching out to teachers
    • Investigating modern writers and literature
    • Composing and revising book summaries
    • General administrative duties as required
  • Conversing professionally via email with external stakeholders, such as community partners, educators, and occasionally authors.
  • Attending PEN/Faulkner staff meetings and lending assistance when required for the organization’s in-person literary and awards activities.

Eligibility Criteria:

Fiction authors with teaching expertise and a genuine desire to work with young students in grades 3–12 are eligible to apply for this fellowship.

Ideal Applicants Must:

  • Practice writing creatively on a regular basis.
  • possess prior experience mentoring or instructing young people or community groups, particularly those from low-income, Latinx, or Black backgrounds.
  • Feel at ease creating creative writing lessons that are skill-based.
  • Exhibit excellent communication and organizing abilities.
  • Be willing to embrace the process and take innovative chances.

Additional Requirements:

  • Working in DC schools requires passing a drug and alcohol test as well as a background check.
  • Since about 20% of the programming is for bilingual learners, those who speak Spanish are highly encouraged to apply.
  • Available from 8:30 AM to 3 PM, Monday through Friday, beginning September 1, 2025.
  • Must live in a neighborhood in Washington, DC, or be ready to visit there.
