The International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS) encourages critical, humanistic, and collaborative work on, with, within, and beyond Asia. Our platforms and programs are organized around five interrelated fundamental priorities: research, education and pedagogy, civic engagement, network building, and communication and dissemination.

The International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS) offers the World Fellowship 2026, a fully funded 12-month fellowship. The fellowship lasts from October 2026 to October 2027 and is broken into three periods. The first six months will be spent at Leiden University in the Netherlands, followed by a three- to five-month second phase at one of the selected co-host universities. The final phase will take place at the IIAS in Leiden, the Netherlands. The fellowship seeks to welcome people from all over the world to pursue research in Asian studies. Structure of the IIAS Fellowship:

The IIAS fellowship consists of three Phases:

Phase 1: Six Months at IIAS in Leiden, Netherlands

Participants will discuss, cooperate on projects, publish their work, and take part in numerous activities with IIAS and its partners throughout Europe.

Phase 2: Three to Five Months at One of the Co-Hosting Institutes:

  • Institute for Urban Research (IUR), Malmö University (Malmö, Sweden)
  • Max Weber Centre for Advanced Cultural and Social Studies, University of Erfurt (Erfurt, Germany)
  • Max Weber Forum For South Asian Studies (Delhi, India)
  • School of Culture Resources of Taipei National University of the Arts (TNUA) (Taipei, Taiwan)
  • Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (Madrid, Spain)

Phase 3: Return to IIAS in Leiden, Netherlands

Back in Leiden, you’ll share insights from your co-host experience.

Eligibility Criteria:

To be considered for the IIAS Fellowship Program 2026 in the Netherlands, international students must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Applicants from any country are eligible.
  • Target audience: International early- to mid-career researchers.
  • A PhD is required; otherwise, your defense must take place by February 15, 2026 (with university confirmation).
  • You must be available from October 2026 to October 2027, with arrival in the first week of October 2026.
  • If you are employed, you will require an official release for the duration of the fellowship. You cannot hold multiple fellowships or job contracts at once.
