The Guggenheim Foundation was founded by Senator Guggenheim and his wife, Olga, in honor of their son, a bright young scholar who passed away in 1922 at the age of 17. Since its founding, the Foundation has worked to “add to the education, literary, artistic, and scientific power of this country, and also to provide for the cause of better international understanding,” as the senator stated in his first Letter of Gift. The Guggenheim Foundation provides fellowships to outstanding people who want to pursue studies in any area of knowledge and artistic expression under the most liberal terms.
Approximately 200 Fellows are chosen annually after a rigorous competition that evaluates both prior achievements and future goals. The average success rate in recent years has been about 5%. Therefore, it is not really necessary to demonstrate your commitment. You must demonstrate that you have already contributed significantly and that your next endeavor merits time, autonomy, and assistance.
