The FRIAS Fellowship Programmes in Germany are fully sponsored for both junior and senior researchers. The fellowships will be hosted by Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies. The programmes will gather researchers from Germany and other parts of the world. During the international fellowships, researchers will have the opportunity to work on their projects among the community of varied cultural and academic backgrounds. During the programme, fellows will collaborate in different disciplines but will enjoy the resources at the disposal of University of Freiburg. The programme provides monthly allowance and mobility allowance to compensate travel expenses. Fellows will have access to the office space and university library. Host university will offer exceptional research facilities to the fellows in their unique projects. In accordance with the conditions, all scholars will either be given a fellowship contract at the university or some other form of compensation.
There are three fully sponsored fellowship programmes in Germany depending upon the research experience of the scholars. These include FRIAS Early Career Fellowship Programme, FRIAS Senior Fellowship Programme, and the FRIAS Sustainable Governance Fellowship Programme for Researchers from Africa, each of which will be held between 1 September 2026 – 31 August 2027 in Freiburg, Germany. Eligibility Criteria for FRIAS Fellowship Programmes
Early Career FRIAS Fellowship Programmes
- The applicants need to have their doctoral degree completed with not more than eight years of post-doctoral experience.
- The applicants need to have four peer-reviewed publications after 1 January 2022.
- The applicants need to have six months of research/study experience in an academic institution of another country different from that of their first country’s academic degree institution.
- The candidates should have difficult and innovative research projects.
- Researchers of any discipline which can be hosted by the University of Freiburg can apply.
- Researchers from any nationality can apply.
Senior FRIAS Fellowship Programmes
- Applicants must have finished their doctoral program and should have at least eight years of post-doctoral work experience.
- Applicants must have a total of 10 peer-reviewed articles published from 1 January 2020.
- Applicants must have at least six months of research and/or study experience in an educational institution in another country from their first country.
- Applicants must have difficult but innovative research topics which are of high academic quality.
- Researchers from all disciplines who could conduct research at the University of Freiburg are eligible to apply.
- Applicants from all nationalities are eligible to apply.
Sustainable Governance FRIAS Fellowship Programmes
- The applicants must have attained their doctoral qualification and have at least eight years of post-doctoral experience.
- Applicants must have a minimum of five peer-reviewed papers since 1 January 2017, with at least one being a co-authored paper.
- Applicants must reside in an African country.
- Applicants must have at least six months of research or study experience at an academic institution in another country from that where they attained their first academic degree AND should have attained Master/PhD in an African country.
- Applicants must have research topics which are challenging and innovative of top academic standard.
- Applications in the disciplines of Humanities and Social Sciences with sustainable governance focus will be entertained.
- Applicants must provide a letter of cooperation from an academic partner at the University of Freiburg.
