The Killam Awards for Excellence in Mentoring 2027 honor faculty members at UBC Vancouver who have established a remarkable track record of mentoring graduate students in their academic, professional, and personal lives over an extended period of time. Another point that should be noted right away is that students are not allowed to actively nominate their lecturers. Nominations from faculty members must first have departmental approval. Nonetheless, graduate students can have a significant impact by offering a compelling letter of support and urging a department head to choose an exceptional mentor.

The University of British Columbia (UBC) Vancouver faculty members who have shown a remarkable dedication to mentoring graduate students over many years are recognized with the Killam Awards for Excellence in Mentoring. These awards, which are supported by the Killam General Endowment, honor mentors who model excellence in scholarship, professional behavior, and integrity while fostering intellectual, professional, and personal growth in their mentees. A mid-career faculty member (less than 12 years of university service) and a senior faculty member (12 years or more of university service) get two prizes each year. How to Apply for UBC Killam Fellowship?

The procedure is as follows if your department has a professor in mind who qualifies:

  • Choose the right category first.
  • Determine whether the prospective nominee falls into the senior or mid-career group depending on the number of years they have served at the university.
  • Before making any significant preparations, engage the department head.
  • Because each department may only nominate one candidate in each category—a maximum of two nominations—approval from the department head is required.
  • Select a faculty nominee who qualifies.
  • The nomination must be filled out and submitted by a faculty member, not a graduate student.
  • Get the nomination statement ready.
  • Up to two pages of justification for the faculty member’s deservingness of the prize are permitted on the nomination form. Instead of being ceremonial, make this evidence-based.
  • Find out the nominee’s mentoring philosophy.
  • The nominee provides a one-page statement outlining their mentoring philosophy and methods for fostering student achievement.
  • Fill out the Mentoring Record.
  • The nominee is required to provide a list of graduate students they have mentored, which may include pertinent mentorship from previous universities.
  • Gather up to five compelling letters of support.
  • Each letter must have a single author, be signed, and be no more than two pages. Letters from current or former graduate students are especially important.
  • Include the nominee’s resume.
  • When appropriate, UBC also promotes the Professoriate Stream CV structure.
  • Combine all of the information into a single PDF.
  • Each contender must have a single, comprehensive PDF nomination package.
  • Use the appropriate Qualtrics form to submit.
  • Departments are expressly instructed by UBC not to upload these nominations on SharePoint.
